Local Island Landmarks

Boca Grande has several, historical landmarks and points of interest

Hudson's Grocery

A unique store in the heart of downtown, Hudson’s Grocery serves freshly made foods, and offers an outstanding butcher shop along with fresh produce. Locals and visitors can find everything they need in this favorite Boca Grande establishment.

Boca Grande Range Light

Many visitors to Boca Grande think that the Range Light on Gulf Boulevard is actually the lighthouse. They are actually two different structures. A lighthouse is a structure that can be lived in, while a range light is a tall, tubular structure that is used only for serving as a navigational light. The 105-foot structure was built in Delaware in 1881 and moved to Boca Grande in 1927.

Our Lady of Mercy Church

Six Royal Palm trees lead to the entrance of Our Lady of Mercy Church which was built in 1950, donated by Mrs. Gertrude Hill Gavin, and designed by noted architect F. Burrell Hoffman. Prior to the building of the bridge and the church, priests came by boat. Services were held in the Boca Grande Hotel, or in the Gasparilla Inn.

Banyan Street

Shaded by a magnificent canopy of Banyan trees, Banyan Street is perhaps the most photographed location in Boca Grande. In 1915, Peter Bradley, builder of the Gasparilla Inn, gave instruction to plant the Banyan Trees along both sides of what we would otherwise call “2nd Street.” As one of the most beautiful tree lined streets to be found anywhere, Banyan Street has become a popular venue as a very special island wedding location.

Boca Grande Light House

The Boca Grande Lighthouse, located at the very south end of Gasparilla Island, was built by the United States Lighthouse Service in 1890, to mark the entry channel known as Boca Grande Pass, into Charlotte Harbor from the Gulf of Mexico. The museum inside the historic lighthouse opened to the public in March of 1999. The Boca Grande Lighthouse is one of six lighthouses in Florida that are open to the public. The lighthouse is located in Gasparilla Island State Park.

Whidden's Marina

Founded by the late Captain Sam Whidden in the 1920’s, and has been passed down through the generations to its current owner, Sam’s daughter, Isabelle Joiner. Historic Whiddens, located south of channel marker 7 has the distinction of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The marina also houses the Gasparilla Island Maritime Museum, depicting life on the island during the 1900’s.
